The winner of the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize has just been announced!

Thought to be the highest award given within the architectural industry, it’s a huge honor to be the receiver of this UK only prize, given only to buildings that show “high architectural standards and substantial contribution to the local environment”.

Each year only buildings that have already received a RIBA National Award are eligible, and from these six are short-listed to be considered.

All these buildings are winners in their own right, and demonstrate skill, strength, creativity and innovations. However, the Stirling Prize is considered the equivalent of the Booker Prize, and even though there is no monetary reward, the accolade of being short-listed is an award in itself.

From these revered six projects, the one thought to have given the most to the development of the industry becomes the eventual Stirling Prize.

Riba Stirling Award 2018 Slices

The Big Six RIBA Stirling Award Buildings

The Big Six in 2018 was made of the following buildings:

And The 2018 RIBA Stirling Award Winner is…

The outstanding winner this year was Bloomberg by Foster & Partners.

Sustainability is at its very heart, one of the reasons if met the criteria of “design vision, innovation, originality, capacity to stimulate, engage and delight occupants and visitors, accessibility and sustainability, how fit the building is for its purpose, and the level of client satisfaction”.

Not Just an Office Building

The judges also loved the experience that the building and the space around it created for users. The bridge joining the two buildings overlooks a pedestrian-only arcade sitting on the site of a forgotten Roman road. Hidden beneath is the site of the Temple of Mithras and supporting museum, open to visitors. You’ll also find a roof-top concourse abounding with fantastic views across the city, giving a further dimension to the building.

What Makes Bloomberg by Foster & Partners So Special?

Inside the helix ramp within creates a unique and airy work space, based on openness, collaboration and sustainability. Mirrored artwork by Olafur Eliasson within the main entrance enhances the experience further, while large windows continue the theme of space, as well as picture postcard views of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Frosted glass is also used to conceal the lifts and facilities, unusually positioned on the edges of the building instead of the centre. The clever use of aluminum petals on the ceiling reflect the light form the many windows, while also dispersing the light into an ambient presence.

See it for Yourself

If you can’t get to see the award-winning buildings for yourself, RIBA are hosting several events across the UK, allowing the public to view through images the 6 short-listed buildings.

See the schemes at 66 Portland Place, London – 3 October to 9 November 208, before the exhibition moves to 66 RIBA North Liverpool from 16 November to 23 February 2019.

The Glazing is the Star

Although each part of the building plays an important part, it’s the clever use of the windows in conjunction with the petals that makes this building so stunning. The glazing provides an essential aspect of the overall experience, including large opening panels that help bring the outside in and give the illusion of even more space.

Here at Slimline Glazing we believe a building is nothing without its windows and the Bloomberg building mirrors our sentiments. No wonder it is Britain’s Best Building 2018!
