Did you know that 29% of adults in the UK suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)? According to research completed by The Weather Channel and YouGov, feeling blue in the winter is common - with results showing that over half the adult population feel a worsening in their mood as the days shorten.

Light for health

So what is behind this mood change? The amount of light your body is exposed to could play an important role, as it is linked to your health and well-being. Natural light (or lack of it) can affect not only your mood, but your productivity and alertness, and how your body operates at a physical level.

Head outside

The Seasonal Affective Disorder Association advises spending at least an hour outdoors to benefit from natural light. Natural light is stronger than a light bulb or even a specially designed lightbox. However, from a practical perspective, it may not always be possible to spend time outdoors, particularly in winter. So seeking other methods of getting your light fix should be high on your agenda.

Why doesn’t artificial light cut it?

Artificial light just doesn’t have the same positive effect. According to The Netdoctor, this type of light is guilty of decreasing melatonin, the hormone responsible for controlling your natural body clock (also known as your circadian rhythms). So if you rely too much on artificial light to show you the way through your day, you may find it difficult to sleep or think clearly. It can also have a negative effect on your blood pressure and glucose levels, all of which can add up to illness and depression.

Using a lightbox?

The traditional answer to counteract these issues is to invest in a light box. However, they can cause a few mild side effects, such as headaches and nausea, and occasionally lead to hyperactivity. These do all wear off, but at the end of the day a lightbox is still producing artificial light.

Is your existing glazing working?

Instead of using a lightbox, think first about what your windows and doors are doing for you. Are they small and pokey, and hidden away behind a multitude of material or blinds? Is the glass blurred, and blocking your visibility? Are they crying out for modernisation?

Let the light in

Take this opportunity to transform your windows to a stunning glass feature that not only brightens your home but also your mood. Even on a typical dull UK winter’s day, natural light will penetrate even those darkest corners of your lounge when you install quality modern glass windows and doors.

The Daily Mail reports how just sitting next to a window can double your alertness, with an overall knock-on effect on your brain functioning.

Nature knows best

So if you are feeling a little blue, let nature guide you. Open up your home to the light from outside and soon you’ll feel on top of the world.
